Is there a way to check if an essay was written by OpenAI?

Updated 1/1/2023

Originally I posted this AI generated article somewhat as a joke – as it was what chat-got spat out when asked the question. As this is now clearly becoming a real issue, I’ve started to follow various ways to detect AI generated content, and there are some tools that are good at detecting content created by gpt2 and gpt3. The best one I’ve found currently is this one:

Just paste the content and it’ll give you a percent estimate of AI generated vs original generated parts. I haven’t tested yet to see how much text needs to be changed to fool it, but so far it seems very accurate. Hopefully tools like this will become reliable enough to prevent massive cheating in school and even professionally.

It correctly scored the original post here as 99.98% fake. This makes me somewhat more optimistic that the web won’t become quickly overrun with AI generated spam.

Here’s the original OpenAI output I used for this article:

Yes, there is a way to check if an essay was written by OpenAI. OpenAI is an artificial intelligence research laboratory founded by Elon Musk and Sam Altman. OpenAI is known for developing artificial intelligence (AI) systems that can generate human-like text.

Finally, it is possible to check if an essay was written by OpenAI by comparing it to other essays written by OpenAI. OpenAI’s AI system generates essays that have a similar style and structure. If an essay is similar to other essays written by OpenAI, it is likely that it was written by OpenAI.

In conclusion, there are several ways to check if an essay was written by OpenAI.
